By the age of 19, Barb was raising four children as a single parent. Barb has experienced many hardships in her life, and was living in her car when she began receiving supports through the JHS in 2018. "I felt stuck and was drinking to mask the pain. I needed to do something more positive”.

That's when Barb joined our employment program, ACES, and expressed an interest in becoming a firefighter. Barb showed up every day prepared for her classes and training, despite still living in her car. We helped secure housing for Barb to further improve her ability to achieve her employment goals. After completing 4 weeks of training and certification programs, our ACES team worked with Barb to identify and secure employment related to fighting wildfires. Barb now has a home and a job that she loves. "I have a positive outlook on the future and a career I am very proud of. I want to thank JHS for giving me a new start and hope in life”
