Home Share is a supported living option in which an adult with a developmental disability, under the care of Community Living British Columbia (CLBC), shares a home with a Homeshare provider, who also provides ongoing individualized support. Homes may be owned, rented, or leased by the Homeshare provider or by the individual receiving support.
Many Home Share providers agree that this type of support is more than just a job – it’s a lifestyle choice. Individuals tend to choose this option because it provides an ideal balance of support and independence. Home Sharing is person-centred in that it allows individuals to select a Homeshare provider and home environment that meets their unique goals and preferences. Support is flexible and develops according to the changing needs of the individual. For some, Homesharing is a stepping stone to even greater independence. For others, it is an arrangement that will last for many years.
Home Share providers enter a contract with John Howard Society, where the Home Share provider receives both rent (as established across the province) and additional support income. Homeshare providers are expected to provide quality care and support. As such, providers are required to undergo a CLBC mandated screening process that includes criminal record checks, a home study, reference checks, a medical certificate and a valid first-aid certificate. Our Homeshare Coordinator will assist applicants to complete this process.
